The protest on May 30, 2017 was held at Caltech because of its participation in the making of the Thirty Meter Telescope proposed by Thirty Meter Telescope, Inc (TMT), according to Mililani Youg. In 2015 the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled that TMT did not have a permit to build the telescope on Mauna Kea. Now the Department of Land and Natural Resources is re-applying for a permit to build the 18 story telescope on the mountain of Mauna Kea. This island is held sacred by the Native Hawaiians and is the major source of pure water for Big Island. The Hawaiians believe that the water will be contaminated by the construction and life of the telescope..

The protest held in front of Caltech is in sync with Kumu Pua Case delivering papers to Department of Land and Natural Resources as part of a process for the decision to be made, whether Mauna Kea will be the home of the Thirty Meter Telescope or not. The decision should be made soon.
