"History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again."
Those are the words from legendary poet and author Maya Angelou who has taken it upon herself to take her very own look at history. Angelou's third annual Black History Month Special "Telling Our Stories" will be airing on 175 public radio stations nationwide throughout the remainder of the month.
The program features interviews with five guests, including Grammy award-winning singer Alicia Keys, media mogul Oprah Winfrey, diplomat Kofi Annan, singer and actress Jennifer Hudson and playwright Regina Taylor.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Angelou said she is sharing black history in "a way that you get it and don't even know you got it," a task she considers her duty.
"We owe the truth, not just the facts," she said recently in a phone interview from her home in Winston-Salem, N.C. "I'm celebrating my 84th year on this planet. I've seen many things, I've learned many things. I've certainly been exposed to many things and I've learned something: I owe it to you, to tell you."
