Dominican Republic Politician Killed In His Office

A former employee of the mayor allegedly shot him and his security guard before killing himself.

Juan de los Santos, a mayor in the Dominican Republic municipality of Santo Domingo Este, was shot and killed Tuesday in his office.

He had just returned from a meeting of mayors at the Dominican Federation of Municipalities, local paper Listín Diario reports. Once back in his office, a former employee of his allegedly shot de los Santos in the head and the chest, then shot a security guard who came into the room and ultimately killed himself.

The assailant, the victim and the security guard were all found dead on the scene, 7 Días reports.

Details have yet to emerge about the shooter's motive.

This represents a "national tragedy" for the country, Dominican Municipal League President Johnny Jones said.

De los Santos, born in 1970, was a businessman who became involved in politics in 2002 and was voted mayor in 2006, according to his profile on the Dominican Liberation Party's website. He was married with five children, and posted photos to Facebook of his children at school the morning of his murder.
