McCormick Place Green Line Stop Construction Underway As Area Gets First New Station In 35 Years

The Chicago Transit Authority is getting a new stop on the Green Line at McCormick Place -- the first new stop for the line in more than 35 years.

City officials broke ground on construction during a press conference Thursday, kicking off the multi-million dollar project managed by the Chicago Department of Transportation.

The station at the intersection of Cermak and State will be open in late 2014, officials say.

Designs for the new station at Cermak and State share the same feel as the revamped Morgan Pink Line station; Curbed Chicago notes the same architect is designing the new McCormick Place stop.

The new station will include two entrances off Cermak Road and one at 23rd Street and the main station building will feature elevators, bike racks, several dozen security cameras and enclosed boarding platforms, according to city officials.

The Sun-Times notes that two years prior, city officials said the new station would be funded through a $2 parking and congestion tax on downtown drivers. According to the mayor's office Thursday, the $50 million project is being funded through TIF money.
