Love brings a couple together, but life—i.e., military service, opportunities, college, etc.—can force them to live apart.

For Carl and Dee Tutt, passion, that is, Dee’s Savile Premium Rumtini business, has forced her to live in Los Angeles and Carl to live in Illinois. “With Dee wanting to put her product on the market, it was very important to get her off to a good start,” Carl, president of Integrating Green Technologies, explains. “California was one of the best places for her to go.”

Dee says constant contact and faith has kept their marriage humming along. “We’re mature Christians and we believe in our wedding vows,” Dee says. “We have trust in one another and we talk all the time on the phone, and [via] FaceTime.”

According to Statistics Brain, the Tutts are just one of approximately 3.75 million Americans living in a long-distance marriage.

About 40% of long distance relationships don’t last, but there isn’t evidence that long-distance relationships are more vulnerable than proximate relationships. To the contrary, there is evidence that long-distance relationships are more successful because partners who don’t see each other face-to-face often are more romantic when they are together. (If your long-distance relationship has hit a few bumps, try these 7 tips.)

The secret of the Tutts’ success is three-fold: 1. They were friends for a long time before they became a couple; 2. This is their second marriage; and, 3. Carl supports his wife’s endeavors.

For many, successful couples like the Tutts are proof that love and commitment can withstand the test of time-and distance.
