Take a look at any "funniest tweet" roundup and there's a high likelihood you'll find Megan Amram. The comedy writer's hilarious Twitter feed even helped Amram score her current job, writing on one of TV's most beloved comedies, "Parks and Recreation."
In her first book Science... For Her!, which hit shelves Nov. 4, Amram takes a page out of Stephen Colbert's playbook by parodying the terribly misled stereotypes of women today.
"I think something that Colbert does so incredibly well is that you can win a lot more people over to your side or show that you're right by playing a crazy devil's advocate," she said. For example, Amram attempts to "prove" Todd Akin's legitimate rape theory, which highlights its absurdity even more than challenging it. "I could've written a very serious, feminist manifesto, but instead I decided to go all the way around, like 360 degrees, and write the opposite to prove the same point," she said.
Biologically illiterate congressmen aside, Amram said that detecting and calling out sexism at every level is equally important to get rid of it. "I think it is just being vigilant about things you see every day and how they may be reinforcing stereotypes that are not true," she told host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani. "The point I wanted to get across is not necessarily to change everything about the world, but it's just to show that you need to be thinking of everything in terms of feminism, hopefully, and every type of prejudice."
