Mel Gibson In 'Machete Kills'? Robert Rodriguez Wants Mel For 'Machete' Sequel

Mel Gibson May Get Another Chance

Mel Gibson is in the news again, but not because of a terrifying audio recording. According to Deadline.com, the embattled actor is in talks to join "Machete Kills" for director Robert Rodriguez. The film is a follow-up to Rodriguez's 2010 grindhouse B-movie, "Machete." (THR has also confirmed Mel's involvement.)

Gibson and "Machete" were first associated earlier this month when Deadline.com reported that Rodriguez was looking to cast the 56-year-old actor in his new film, along with Michelle Williams. No word yet if Williams will participate in this bit of genre madness.

"I feel like I really need to get in there and do it," Rodriguez told THR about directing the film himself (the first "Machete" was co-directed by Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis due to scheduling issues). "It’s just a lot of fun; it’s a really cool concept, and I think it takes it to another level in a way that’s compelling for me to go and do it myself."

About that concept: "Machete Kills" will reportedly focus on Machete (Danny Trejo) and his attempts to stop an arms dealer from causing worldwide annihilation. Rodriguez had initially planned to make three "Machete" films, with the third one taking place in space, so you can only imagine where the plot in part two winds up.

Gibson next appears in the direct-to-VOD feature "Get the Gringo." Gibson made headlines in recent weeks after screenwriter Joe Eszterhas accused the star of making anti-Semitic and threatening comments to him during the screenwriting process on Mel's Judah Maccabee movie. Eszterhas released an audio recording of Gibson's rant; Gibson has threatened to sue because of a "basic human right" to privacy.
