Melissa McCarthy is one of the most gifted physical comedians working today, as evidenced by her feature film work, her guest hosting stints on "Saturday Night Live," and this most recent season of "Mike & Molly." The CBS sitcom is leaning hard on McCarthy to bring her signature lunacy to the mix, and it's definitely adding new energy to the show
It may be in the simplest moments that McCarthy shines the brightest. A brilliant physical comedian can get laughs with the simplest of set-ups. In this case, it was McCarthy squaring off against an exercise ball ... and it was hilarious! After failing to get her writing chair comfortable enough, Molly decided she'd give the exercise ball a try.
Anyone who's tried to sit on one will tell you it's not as easy as it might look. For Molly, it was an absolute disaster, as she nearly wiped out on several occasions. For "Mike & Molly" it was a simple scene that may have had some of the strongest laughter of the night. The show doesn't have to break the mold to be funny. Melissa McCarthy can make anything funny, and sometimes simple is better. Just point the camera and let her go. The laughs will follow.
