For some, extreme couponing is a competitive sport. For Melissa Mozzo-Mart, extreme couponing quickly escalated into a violent contact sport that left her injured.
Mozzo-Mart, an extreme couponer, was allegedly attacked by a Dollar Tree store manager in Germantown, Tenn., ABC News reports. Mozzo-Mart was shopping with her friend and fellow extreme couponer the day before Thanksgiving when she was accused of harassing the store manager by trying to use too many coupons.
When Mozzo-Mart gathered her coupons and attempted to leave the store, she was reportedly physically attacked.
"With her fist balled up that's when she hit me in the eye and the face," Mozzo-Mart told ABC News.
Mozzo-Mart’s friend, Jennifer Hill, caught the whole interaction on video with her camera phone. The store manager is allegedly being charged with misdemeanor assault.
According to ABC News, Dollar Tree representatives said they are taking Mozzo-Mart's incident "very seriously" and the incident is under further investigation.
Unfortunately, Mozzo-Mart was not the only victim of holiday shopping violence this holiday weekend. An accused shoplifter at a Walmart in Georgia died after getting into a physical altercation with store employees Sunday morning, WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News reports. The man was reportedly detained by Walmart workers after leaving the store with two DVD players.
A shopper at a Sears in Texas allegedly pulled a gun on a man who punched him in the face while waiting in line, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
The holiday shopping season is already off to a record start with 246 million shoppers visiting stores and websites over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend, according to a survey of 4,000 shoppers by research firm BIGinsight. The average holiday shopper spent $423 over Thanksgiving weekend, up from last year's figure of $398.
