Meredith Vieira Becomes The First Woman To Anchor NBC Olympics Primetime Coverage

Meredith Vieira is taking over as the substitute for Bob Costas during NBC's primetime coverage of the Olympics on Friday night, as Costas continues to recover from his eye infection.

Vieira will be the first woman to ever anchor NBC's primetime Olympics broadcast, which Costas has hosted since 1988. “It’s an honor to fill in for him," she said on Friday's "Today."

Costas made his Sochi debut with the infection last week. Things got so bad that Matt Lauer had to fill in for him.

But Lauer also has another job, so, on Friday, NBC announced that Vieira, who is in Sochi as a special correspondent for "Today," will pitch in, too.
