'Sophie's Choice' Actors Reunite As Romeo And Juliet

Monday night was The Public Theater’s 2012 Gala celebrating the 50th anniversary of Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater. The evening honored Al Pacino who graced the Delacorte stage before when he played Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice" during summer 2010. But perhaps the most exciting event of the evening was the one-night-only staged reading of "Romeo and Juliet" with Kevin Kline and Meryl Streep -- who previously starred together in "Sophie's Choice" -- as the titular teenagers. The reading was directed by Daniel Sullivan.

Tickets for the event were steep, ranging from $1,500 to a whopping $ 100,000 table in honor of Joseph Papp, founder of The Public and Shakespeare in the Park..

Take a look through the slideshow below to see some photos from the evening as well as a few tweets from the attendees, which included Chelsea Clinton, Laura Linney, Julianna Margulius, Steve Martin, Cynthia Nixon, Alan Alda, Diane Sawyer and Julia Stiles.
