Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep is just like millions of Americans: She watches "The Office."
Streep, who co-stars with former "Office" star Steve Carell in "Hope Springs," told The Hollywood Reporter she was captivated by Carell's performance as Michael Scott in the NBC comedy.
"The first time I saw 'The Office,' I thought: 'Who is this? He's absolutely wonderful," Streep said. "His character has a quality of distraction and narcissism that is completely out of his control, but there is a pathos that's very authentic so you believe in this person and feel for him."
For his work on "The Office," Carell was nominated for six Emmys and six Golden Globes, one of which he won. The actor left "The Office" after Season 7. "I was always assuming I'd leave after that season was done," Carell said. "Everyone was well aware of that. I owed the show a lot and I loved doing it, but you have to take risks."
Following Carell's departure, "The Office" brought in James Spader, Catherine Tate and promoted Ed Helms' character to branch manager. Season 9 of "The Office," which kicks off on Thurs., Sept. 27 at 9 p.m. ET, will serve as a reboot of sorts. New characters are being added to the cast as many stars -- including Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak -- have left the show.
