Metro Rider Took Smartcar-Like 'Mobility Device' Onto Train (PHOTO)

WASHINGTON -- Here's something you don't see everyday on the Green Line.

Last week, celebrity image consultant Brian "SynKami" Boler was on his way to a local gym and snapped this amazing photo of a woman who drove a Smartcar-like vehicle onboard a Greenbelt-bound Green Line train.

Dan Stessel, a spokesman for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, said the transit agency is aware of the vehicle which "definitely raised some eyebrows" at Metro headquarters. The woman in the vehicle, who has not been identified, told Metro Transit Police that she uses the contraption as a "mobility device."

What's unclear is whether the device is safe to use inside the Metrorail system. Stessel said Metro's chief safety officer is reviewing the situation to see whether it meets safety guidelines and should provide "additional guidance within a week."

Metro has a set of rules for when and where conventional and collapsable bikes are permissible in the rail system, in addition to guidelines covering Segways and mobility devices.
