Mets Need to Ditch Closer (Song)

They left all these, but they felt the need to keep this 1974 hit? What gives? Is Bachman Turner Overdrive huge Mets fans or something? When the Yankees win at home they play Frank Sinatra's New York, New York. It's great.

As R.A. Dickey put the finishing touches on his absolute masterpiece on Monday all you could hear was: the knuckleball hitting Josh Thole's mitt, the umpire calling strike three, Dickey pumping his fist, the roar of the crowd and then Bachman-Turner Overdrive's Taking Care of Business.

One of these things is not like the others!

Now is the time to pivot away from this song and anoint a new song to celebrate wins at home games. It's not that I don't like this song, it's just that it means nothing to me. It's boring and commercial; It sounds like something market research would decide to play at the end of games. It's vanilla when everything about the Mets is Rocky Road. It just doesn't fit! The only time the Mets gave that song a rest, from what I can remember, is when they used The Doors L.A. Woman in 1998. I loved it when they used L.A. Woman, but BTO makes me cringe.

The Mets didn't bring too many things over from Shea Stadium. They left the Red, Blue and Orange seats, they left the blue outfield walls (they finally painted them Shea blue this offseason) and they would have left the original Home Run Apple for the wrecking ball if it wasn't for fan outrage online. They left all these, but they felt the need to keep this 1974 hit? What gives? Is Bachman Turner Overdrive huge Mets fans or something? When the Yankees win at home they play Frank Sinatra's New York, New York. It's great. Classic song from an absolute titan of the music industry. I get it. It's bombastic and everything the Yankees want to convey to their fans and their opposition: You were just beaten by one of the greats.

And then there are the Mets. The Mets are younger than the Yankees. Much younger. Their end of game music should reflect that. Here are some possible replacements for the end of game music at Citifield:

Beastie Boys -- Body Movin (Fatboy Slim remix)

Oh hells yeah. Cue it up to the 1:00 mark. Not only is this song bad ass, but it's appropriate for the franchise. The Boys are Mets fans, from New York and it's tribute to MCA. It's emotional and hits all the right notes for the 2012 New York Mets.

Key lyric: Let me get some action from the back section.

They're talking about us in the nose bleeds, right? The Shea Faithful (now the Citi Faithful). You can just see Justin Turner giving someone a whipped cream pie to the face to this song. The Yankees can have Sinatra. I'll take the Beastie Boys from the Mets any day.

Iggy Pop & The Stooges -- Search and Destroy

Confession: When I was a kid I used to dream about coming out of the bullpen to this song. And when I say "when I was a kid" I mean two months ago.

Key Lyric: Look out honey cause I'm using technology.

The Mets are the product of Moneyball (rent it on DVD, folks!). They're using technology to beat their opponents. This is a club that was destined to finish with under 70 wins for the year!

The Heavy - How You Like Me Now

Sure, the movie The Fighter brought this song back into our collective memories but it can totally work for this scrappy New York Mets team.

Key Lyric: How You Like Me Now?

Picked by most newspapers and analysts to finish dead last in the NL East and worst in the majors at the beginning of the year. How you like me now?

Shelly Palmer - Let's Go Mets

In the end, there could only be one real winner. I used to own this song on cassette. I wore it down I used to listen to it so often! It's so '80s and dated that it actually works. Women in Williamsburg are bringing back rings with their names on it, the Mets can bring back this classic. Heck, they probably own the rights to this one too!

Key Lyric: We got the team work to make the dream work. Let's Go Mets!

When I was a kid my dad used to play the long version of this song once we got to Northern Blvd. The long version contained Mets play by play highlights. Take a look at this music video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pc3cGTU3C0s Young Keith! Lenny Dykstra not in jail! And of course, Gary "Kid" Carter. It brings back some great memories and it evokes nostalgia of better days. Something BTO's Taking Care of Business doesn't.

It's time to take care of some business and change this song. Another reason to make a change? The Atlanta Braves used this song before the Mets. Do we really want to be copying the lousy Braves? Keep Lazy Mary in the bottom of the 7th, but please, ditch BTO once and for all. Calls to Jay Horowitz and tweets to Mathew Cerrone were not returned for this post.
