Mexican Officials Rejoice In Trump's Debate Defeat

The first presidential debate did NOT go well for Trump.

Donald Trump has made a political career off of insulting Mexico, portraying Mexican immigrants as drug-peddling rapists and vowing to build a wall on the U.S. border to keep them out. So it’s no surprise that when the GOP nominee bombed during the first presidential debate, Mexican leaders rejoiced in his defeat.

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox called Trump “a danger” and questioned why he still hasn’t released his tax returns.

Felipe Calderón, another former Mexican president, noted that a CNN poll taken after the debate showed that most people thought Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton won the night. Calderón also retweeted this post from Clinton’s official Twitter account:

Though Trump has repeatedly insisted that Mexico will pay for his imaginary wall, officials have insisted that the country will do no such thing.

“Mexico will never pay for a wall,” said Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, who met with Trump at the end of August.

If you missed the debate, catch up with The Huffington Post’s coverage. The tl;dr version: Trump lost his cool, told countless lies and bragged about not paying taxes and profiting off of the housing crisis. Better luck next time, Don.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
