Mexico Bullfighting Protest: Demonstrators Strip And Douse Themselves In Fake Blood (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

LOOK: Mexican Protesters Strip To Demand An End To Traditional Blood Sport

Hundreds of protesters in Mexico City stripped to their underwear and doused themselves in fake blood on Sunday to demand an end bullfighting, Spanish newswire EFE reports.

Led by the Organization AnimaNaturalis, the protesters lay on the ground, semi-nude, with sticks planted through their shoulders to imitate the corpses of bulls, while others chanted calls for an end to the blood sport.

The protesters drew parallels between violence against bulls and the drug war launched by former President Felipe Calderón in 2006, which has led to the deaths of more than 60,000 people.

"Mexico is a country marked by violence," founder of AnimaNaturalis Laura Esquivel said, according to EFE. "Making a spectacle out of it undermines our progress toward a culture of peace and respect for other forms of life."

Most Latin American countries have banned the Spanish tradition of bullfighting, though it remains legal in Colombia and Venezuela, as well as in Mexico.
