WASHINGTON -- The United States House of Representatives marked a moment of silence for the victims of the Boston bombings Monday as a congressman from the city called the perpetrators "evil."
Taking a break between votes, House Speaker John Boehner called the body to order, allowing Rep. Michael Capuano (D-Mass.) to address the explosions that killed at least two people and injured more than a hundred more.
"I hesitate to call what the event was, but whatever it was, it was a terrible tragedy," said Capuano, who represents Boston. "No matter how you measure it -- I don't know if it was official terrorisim or unofficial or whatever -- but clearly anyone who acts in such a manner is clearly an evil person and deserves to be called as such."
"I know that today the rest of America stands with us as we have stood with others before us, hopefully never to do again," he added.
Capuano also noted that Monday in Massachusetts was Patriots' Day, marking the start of the American Revolution.
"We remind ourselves regularly what it is to be an American, what it is to be a patriot, what it is to be a member of a society that cares for each other," Capuano said. "I know that the members will join me in wishing well all those people who were injured."
