A number of conservative politicians have come out in support of same-sex marriage in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's hearings on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and Prop 8, but the son of a former Republican president isn't on board.
Michael Reagan, the eldest son of President Ronald Reagan, takes on marriage equality at length in a heated new editorial for The Ironton Tribune. Reagan, who now works as a political consultant and is the author of The New Reagan Revolution: How Ronald Reagan's Principles Can Restore America's Greatness, slams the Republican party as being "too busy cat-fighting with each other" to solidly oppose same-sex marriage.
He questions why more churches and religious organizations haven't spoken out on the subject, asking, "Where’s the moral outrage? Why aren’t thousands of our pastors, priests and rabbis shouting from their pulpits? Why aren’t they leading their congregations through the streets in mass protest?"
He then suggests the Supreme Court's ultimate ruling on the constitutionality of California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage, will have a profound effect on the U.S. at large:
"It’s ultimately about changing the culture of the entire country; it inevitably will lead to teaching our public school kids that gay marriage is a perfectly fine alternative and no different than traditional marriage.
There is also a very slippery slope leading to other alternative relationships and the unconstitutionality of any law based on morality. Think about polygamy, bestiality, and perhaps even murder."

In 2009, Reagan spoke out in defense of Miss California Carrie Prejean's proclaimed anti-gay marriage stance in a CNN interview. "I'll stay with God, you stay with New Hampshire," Reagan said, after it was pointed out that New Hampshire had voted in support of same-sex marriage, as Media Matters pointed out.
