A teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District was arrested Monday morning after a two-day manhunt in connection with the stabbing death of his wife.
Michael Rodney Kane, 46, was taken into custody just after midnight at a motel in Joshua Tree, KTLA reports. Police found him after discovering his abandoned car in a rural community of San Bernardino County.
Authorities have been searching for Kane since Saturday morning, when he allegedly fatally stabbed his estranged wife, 43-year-old Michelle Ann Kane.
The confrontation started Friday, when Michael Kane allegedly showed up at her Canoga Park home and broke windows on the front door and the garage, CBS2 reports.
Michelle Kane reportedly called the police to report that her husband had violated a restraining order. She then fled to a friend's house in West Hills with their two young children.
But Michael Kane allegedly defied the restraining order again, tracking down his family to the West Hills home on the 7100 block of Deveron Ridge Road Saturday morning.
He reportedly forced his way into the home and confronted Michelle Kane, and she tried to escape by running into the street. That's when Michael Kane allegedly stabbed her to death. Neighbors said they could hear her begging her husband to stop, CBS2 reports.
Their two children were not hurt during the incident and are now safe with relatives.
The couple had been married for 10 years but was reportedly going through a bitter divorce. They also had a history of domestic violence, NBC LA reports.
Michael Kane has been an elementary school teacher at Nestle Avenue Charter School in Tarzana since 2008, according to the Los Angeles Daily News, and has been working at LAUSD since 1997. The Daily News also notes that his personnel file shows he's never been subject to disciplinary action at work, and does not have any previous criminal history in LA County.
