18 DISGUSTING Responses To Michael Sam, Gay Football Star, Coming Out

(Note: The following story contains graphic language)

College football star Michael Sam made history last night when he became the first active Division I college football player to come out as gay.

Sam is also eligible for the 2014 NFL Draft and poised to become the first active openly gay player in the league's history.

There has been speculation for quite some time as to when an active member of the NFL or a Division I college player would come out of the closet. Sam's coming out is nothing short of groundbreaking, but that doesn't mean everyone is happy about it and much of the social media firestorm that followed in its wake proved to be, unfortunately, predictably horrifying:

While we've made a huge amount of progress as a community and LGBT individuals, it's important to also remember that not everyone is quite so ecstatic about our political and social gains. These tweets serve as reminder that this is no time to be complacent with our victories and that there is still a huge amount of work left to do.

However, not all of the tweets were as awful. The Miami Dolphins' Richie Incognito, who was suspended from Nov. 3 until last week over allegations of bullying, tweeted his support for Sam.

Hats off to you Michael Sam, that takes some guts #respect
