Protein shakes and fruits -- especially apples -- are Barack and Michelle Obama's go-to post-workout snacks, the First Lady said during a Google+ Hangout to discuss her Let's Move initiative on Monday.
"We have apples all over the White House," Michelle Obama said in the video session, hosted by Kelly Ripa. Obama also loves to eat "hummus with fresh vegetables whenever I can get them."
"We're just like everybody else -- anything that's a fruit or vegetable that gives us the energy we need before a workout, it does the body good," she said.
The First Lady also talked about her exercise regimen with the president -- the two work out every morning together (though she sometimes hits the gym a little earlier than he does!).
The First Lady is putting new emphasis on physical activity for kids with her Let's Move Schools initiative, which encourages kids to get at least 60 minutes of exercise a day.
"We're going to get the whole entire public school system moving in this country, that's our goal," she said.
Her attitude toward encouraging physical activity with her daughters -- and kids in general -- is to really get exercise ingrained into a child's lifestyle -- and to do this, it's important to view exercise as play.
"If you talk about exercise in terms of play and not feel like they have to be an athlete," and just go out and get kids walking, you can "make them feel successful in very small ways. We have to keep encouraging kids, we have to make it fun," she said.
She also mentioned the importance of focusing on the health aspect of weight -- and not the physical appearance. "People can't help how they look, but we want every American to be healthy," she said. She also noted that she doesn't talk about weight with her daughters because she doesn't want them to be weight obsessed.
