FLOTUS Covers EBONY And Talks Being Mom-In-Chief

Mom-in-chief First Lady Michelle Obama sat down for an intimate chat with EBONY's editor-in-chief Amy DuBois Barnett for the publication's May "Mother's Day" issue.

In the cover story shot by Marc Baptiste at the White House, the FLOTUS shows off her fabulously fit physique in a beautiful royal blue (arguably her favorite color) dress by Tracy Reese.

The First Lady talks about how she celebrates Mother's Day (mac-and-cheese is often involved), staying fit (despite the occasional serving of mac-and-cheese) and juggling motherhood, wife-hood and her First Lady duties.

Not only has Michelle done a fabulous job raising her two girls Malia, 13, and Sasha, 10, in front of the nation--she has also taken on the task of improving the lives of children throughout the country with her "Let's Move" campaign to fight childhood obesity.

With so much going on, it helps that the White House is filled with three generations of Robinson/Obama women to keep things in order. Marian Robinson, Michelle's mom, who lives with the family is always within arms reach--perfect for a hug and a helping hand.

“Anytime I need to go and plop on her couch and just talk, she’s always there,” Michelle told EBONY. The First Lady and President also count on grandma to be there to pickup the girls from school, go to sporting events or take them to birthday parties when their schedules won't allow those everyday activities.

Here are a few more highlights from the feature:

On raising Sasha and Malia
"Barack and I feel that our greatest responsibility is to raise two productive, respectful, kind empathetic young women."

On counteracting negative depictions of women in pop culture for the girls

"My husband talks to our girls about how he expects men in their lives to treat them, and he offers examples by how he treats me and how he treats them."

On the President dealing with his daily grind
"He functions better every day when he gets his workout in. It clears his mind--it gets him ready. I don't think there's anybody who can imagine just what that man deals with over the course of a 24-hour period. He is able to do it because he is mentally and physically sharp, so it's a necessity."

The issue, which hits newsstands on April 17, also includes a heartwarming celebrity mom shoot the Knowles clan--Tina, Solange and her adorable son Julez (sadly Bey and Baby Blue Ivy didn't make the shot) and former model Beverly Johnson's fabulous family.
