Look at the promotional materials being floated around the U.S. for Stand Off, and you'd think the film was a crime thriller in the Guy Ritchie mold, with Brendan Fraser backed up by Colm Meaney in some heavy badassery. What it turns out to be is an acerbic comedy in which Fraser, as an American emigre moved to Belfast for personal, and very messy, reasons, finds himself in the middle of a hostage crisis as bits of his past begin to catch up with him. The film was written and directed by Terry George, who was previously responsible for such phenomenal dramas as In the Name of the Father and Hotel Rwanda, and here uses those more serious tools to bring some credible edge to the comedy.
