So, fill me in here: have we decided, as a culture, that now is the time to be making jokes about the Fort Hood shooting? By my reckoning, that avenue of japery currently fits squarely in the "Too Soon!" category. But as it turns out, Michael Mukasey, an ostensibly responsible individual who I am reliably informed was once Attorney General of the United States, is out there, yukking it up, riffing on this recent tragedy.
Yesterday morning, Mukasey was on Washington Times radio, when he was asked to respond to Representative Jim Moran's comments from a week ago, when he criticized opponents of Attorney General Eric Holder's decision to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his 9/11 co-defendants in federal court. At the time, Moran said: "They will seize on any opportunity to [demagogue], and that means they'll even take a stand that's un-American. It's un-American to hold anyone indefinitely without trial. It's against our principles as a nation."
And so, Mukasey brought the mad ha-has:
Q: Congressman Jim Moran of Virginia says anybody that questions KSM coming to New York City for a civilian trial -- that they're un-American. What is your reaction to that?
MUKASEY: I think he's lost touch with reality. He ought to get professional help, perhaps from Maj. Nidal.
LISTEN:
Stay classy, Mike Mukasey!
