Miley Cyrus Lands 'MTV Unplugged' Episode, Debuts Bizarre Promo Art

Miley Cyrus Will Perform On 'MTV Unplugged'

Miley Cyrus is set to return to the MTV stage, but it may be her vocals that are stripped down this time instead of her clothes.

Cyrus is the latest act announced for "MTV Unplugged," the popular music series that asks artists to debut acoustic sets. The network revealed late Monday night that Cyrus' "Unplugged" episode will air Jan. 29.

"Miley’s vision for the performance is like nothing we’ve ever seen," Amy Doyle, MTV's executive VP of music and talent programming strategy, said in a news release. "I can say that this will easily be one of the most memorable 'Unplugged' performances to date."

That means surprise special guests and "intimate reinventions" of "Bangerz" tracks, according to MTV.

"Unplugged" was one of the network's most influential shows in the 1990s. It debuted in November 1989 and went on to feature artists like Paul McCartney, Nirvana, Mariah Carey, Bob Dylan, Hole and Alanis Morissette. Many performers released recorded albums of their "Unplugged" stints that went on to be substantial hits on the Billboard albums chart. (Carey's 1992 release hit No. 3, for example, while Jay Z's 2001 album peaked at No. 20.)

The 21st-century version, known as "Unplugged 2.0," airs less frequently than the series used to. It's featured Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys as well as a cadre of unexpected artists like Korn and Lil Wayne. Florence + the Machine took the stage in 2012.

There's no word on what Cyrus' show will entail when she follows in these artists' footsteps later this month. From the looks of the promotional art released in conjunction with the announcement, the 21-year-old singer will bring her usual flair to the "Unplugged" stage. The photo posted to Cyrus' Instagram features the singer topless and looking wistful while wearing pasties, fake buck teeth and a bleach-blond wig.
