Ming-Na has joined the cast of Joss Whedon's "S.H.I.E.L.D." TV series, according to Deadline.com.
The actress, whose TV credits include "ER," "SGU Stargate Universe" and "Eureka," will play Agent Melinda May. The character was originally listed as Agent Althea Rice, a.k.a. The Calvary, in the original casting breakdowns.
Besides, Ming-Na, the only other cast member attached to "Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D." is Clark Gregg. Gregg will reprise the role of Agent Coulson. The character was last seen meeting his maker thanks to Loki in "Avengers."
"We all love Clark Gregg, there's no doubt about that," Whedon told an audience at New York Comic-Con via a taped message. "From before we made 'The Avengers,' we discussed whether there was a way for him to be a part of the Marvel Universe, perhaps a part of a TV show even after his death."
Whedon is writing the script for the TV series alongside his brother, Jed, and Jed's wife Maurissa Tancharoen. If his schedule permits, Whedon will direct the pilot, which is in production now. When the show was first announced, Whedon stressed the importance of new characters.
"It's new characters. It needs to be its own thing," Whedon said. "It needs to be adjacent [to the MCU] but you don't want to do a show where you're constantly going, 'Iron Man just left, but he was totally here a minute ago.'"
