Minnesota Sewing Circle Makes Magic, Over 1000 Mittens For Needy

In Center City Minnesota, magic is happening through the hands of many. Ethel's Mittens is a sewing circle inspired by Ethel Yund, a woman who gave away her hat and mittens to the less fortunate. In fact, she never had her own hats and mittens because she frequently gave them away, reports NBC's Nightly News' Making a Difference.

Ethel passed away more than a decade ago, but her her family and volunteers created Ethel's Mittens, a group to make hats and mittens for those in need, to honor her memory. Husbands pitch in to watch the children and the effort becomes a full family affair as the kids help cut and sew labels. SR Harris, a local fabric outlet, donates fabric to Ethel's Mittens.

Ethel's Mittens have made about 1000 sets of hats and mittens, but the need is even greater. The hats and mittens are distributed to schools, churches and senior centers, proving that warm hearts really can warm hands.
