The Old Tree, October 30, 2012. Sketchbook drawing, ink on paper, c. 5 ¾”x7 ¾.” This sketch was done the day after Superstorm Sandy. My neighborhood was spared the greatest damage but in Theodore Roosevelt Park, in the back of the Natural History Museum, had long stood two trees, tall, with fantastical limbs. They were ancient when I was born. I marked their presence with awe since my childhood, when I lived up the street, where I live today. I thought of them the dark night of the storm. One was felled by the storm, ripped from the ground at its roots. Not a big deal at all in the scheme of things, but it filled me with sadness
