Coast Guard Searching For Plane That Vanished Over Lake Erie

The plane was en route to Ohio State University.

A small plane that was reportedly traveling from Cleveland to Columbus, Ohio on Friday has vanished over Lake Erie.

Search crews, including the Coast Guard, were trying to locate the Cessna Citation 525, which took off around 10:50 p.m. Thursday from Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, local NBC News station WKYC reported.

The Federal Aviation Administration told The Associated Press that the plane was headed to Ohio State University, and was not visible on radar.

Controllers think the plane may have crashed into the lake, a Coast Guard official told CBS News.

Although the plane was carrying three adults and three children, none were affiliated with the university, Coast Guard official James Cox said.

At the time of this writing, the identities of the passengers and pilot have not been released.
