Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to do something that will change your life in 72 hours. It will include questioning the status quo.
This is the game: In 72 hours, make a difference in someone's life and let me know what you did. Just a simple, random act of kindness. It can be paying for someone's free trade coffee or forgiving someone you have not spoken to because... well, you forget why you just know you were right and they were wrong. It's time to let go of limitations.
Just play with me and I'll share what you did.
OK, I've got more of a rant, but unlike Howard in the classic movie Network, I'm not "mad as Hell." I am motivated by something softer, by love and a clear vision of what we can do person by person, town by town, city by city, state by country by no borders.... Yeah, you may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one...
Children will not be used as workers unless they choose to work because they want to. At age 10, I worked at Ponyland and got to ride a pony every day. I loved it! I worked there for two years. I worked for $1 an hour. I guess that made me rich, since most of the world's population still makes less then $2 a day.
In some places, women still walk seven miles just to get some contaminated water that makes them sick while in an instant, I can get fresh water from my faucet connected to my well. How does that make you feel, reading that? Or did you feel anything? Can you imagine?
When my friend, David, found that out, he did whatever it took to change that nightmarish reality. Now, he is passionate and fulfilled and his friends and family are proud of him like I am because he leads a non-profit that creates rain water catchment systems in many villages in Africa and India. I see the pictures of crying women and happy children ecstatic to have clean water.
There are so many awesome heroes to celebrate, right? Like you, for example. I could hear from you and your choices to do kind stuff over the next 72 hours and that you are forever changed and open-hearted. You could be reading about yourself in just a few weeks. Fun, right?
I look at my clothes and wonder who made what I am wearing. How did it get made? From the farmers to the sewers to the transportation and oil consumed in order for me to wear this... In my utopian world, sweat shops absolutely will not be tolerated. Let's shop local.
In Wendy's world, all people -- without discrimination -- have the right to equal pay for equal work. Systems are set up and funded so that elderly, sick and unemployed individuals contribute to society in valuable ways so they are not a burden, and they are able to keep their home, eat well and be educated.
Why isn't there value if a person reads to a child, or sings songs, or paints, or cooks food in exchange for being taken care of when s/he is frail. Doesn't that just seem right to you?
Reading recent headlines, I see a definite need for these ideas in a truly free democracy. All human beings have the right to life, liberty and equal protection under the law, with fair and public hearings by an independent and impartial tribunal. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
We are given a right to privacy, family, home and correspondence without attacks on our freedom or well-being. No person shall be subject to discrimination, arbitrary arrest, detention, exile, torture, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment. All people deserve dignity, equal rights, freedom, justice and peace.
There will be freedom of speech, belief, thoughts, opinion, expression,religion, worship, truth in media and ability to peacefully assemble -- all expressed with freedom from fear of indefinite detention, police brutality, martial law or any other kind of punishment.
All slavery in any form shall be prohibited and perpetrators will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Our collective global goal is to develop friendly relations between nations where human rights are enjoyed regardless of sex, race, color, age, language, religion, political ideologies, property or any other status.
Marriage is defined as a loving, equal relationship between two consenting adults.
If the people lead, the leaders will follow. Of the people, for the people, by the people will be the focus behind every decision governments make.
I saw a bumper sticker that said, "God Bless America. I love America too. And I love the whole world, so I have another bumper sticker that says, "God Bless the Whole World. No exceptions." We are all simply shades of brown who love and fear and sometimes dream of Utopia.
