There was no clear frontrunner going into the Magnolia State contest. As The Huffington Post's Mark Blumenthal reported, two polls showed Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House, ahead of Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts. Both of these polls showed former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) trailing far behind. A third Rasmussen poll, however, showed Romney leading with 35 percent of the vote and Santorum and Gingrich tied with 27 percent going into Tuesday's contest.

Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) finished third in Mississippi in 2008 with 3.8 percent of the vote, while Romney finished fourth, winning only 1.5 percent of the vote, according to The New York Times.
Mississippi has 40 delegates, but only 37 are up for grabs on primary day. The three remaining delegates are party leaders who are not pledged to any candidate at the national level.
