Obama Campaign Targets Romney Over Trump 'Birther' Conspiracies

Obama Campaign: Why Won't Romney Stand Up To 'Voices Of Extremism'?

The Obama campaign is criticizing Mitt Romney for campaigning with Donald Trump despite the latter's continued focus on the "birther" conspiracy.

The campaign's new web video, released on Tuesday and coinciding with a Romney fundraiser featuring Trump at his Las Vegas hotel, highlights Trump's repeated references to President Barack Obama's birthplace and contrasts Romney with previous Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who is shown in clips from 2008 denouncing supporters' claims questioning Obama's citizenship.

"As a Republican nominee, John McCain stood up to the voices of extremism in his party," says the opening of the video. It later asks why Romney won't do the same, following a series of clips highlighting Trump's birther comments over the past year.

Romney said he will not 'repudiate' Trump, telling reporters on Monday he doesn't agree with all the people who support him but needs to get "50.1 percent or more."

Meanwhile, the Romney campaign was out with its own video attacking the Obama administration's green energy program. The web video, titled "Not Even Half," accuses Obama of giving more than $16 billion taxpayer dollars to companies "that are linked to big Obama and Democrat donors" and later failed.

The new video follows weeks of attacks from the Obama campaign on Romney's record at Bain Capital and targets the Obama administration for providing $535 million in loan guarantees to solar energy firm Solyndra, which filed for bankruptcy last August.

“Obama is giving taxpayer money to big donors, and then watching them lose it," the narrator says. "Good for them. Bad for us."
