To hear GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney tell it in a recent video, a key difference between Democrats and Republicans is that Democrats don't want anybody to live in a lavish mansion, while Republicans want that luxury for every American.
In leaked footage from a Romney campaign fundraiser at the Louisville-area estate of Papa John's pizza founder John Schnatter, the former Massachusetts Republican heaped praise on the beautiful property and predicted that a Democrat would say "no one should live like this."
"Don’t you love this country? What a home this is, what grounds these are, the pool, the golf course," Romney told supporters. "Republicans come here and say everyone should live like this."
The Louisville Courier-Journal reports that tickets to the event cost $1,000-a-head and $25,000 to be listed as a co-host.
Romney continued, accusing President Obama of directly targeting the wealthy.
"As I watch this president attack success, I say, 'You are attacking the very foundation of America's economic vitality.' I don't think he understands it," he said.
Romney attempted to drive home a similar charge Wednesday on the campaign trail.
“The president has done something that is extraordinarily disappointing and I think it may also have an impact on economic vitality in our country. He’s taken to attacking success. He's taken to dividing the American people. He’s taken to finding scapegoats for his own failures, finding some way to explain why it is three and a half years into his presidency this economy is still bumping along the bottom and 23, 24 million people are out of work or stopped looking for work or underemployed and so he’s trying to find someone to attack,” Romney said at a campaign event in Virginia. “This nation is not made great by Americans castigating and demonizing one another. It was made great by Americans standing together and celebrating success and encouraging achievement."
