Morehouse, Howard Rank Among Medical Schools With Strongest Social Mission

A new report ranks medical schools based not on competitiveness but on their social mission.

"The Social Mission of Medical Education," published today in the Annals of Internal Medicine, surveyed 60,043 current physicians who graduated from medical school between 1999 and 2001 on whether or not they worked with underrepresented minorities, in areas that lack experienced physicians and in primary care settings.

Based on that criteria, three historically black colleges came in with the highest social mission scores -- Morehouse College, Meharry Medical College and Howard University. Other schools ranking in the top 20 include the University of Wisconsin, the University of South Alabama and Michigan State University.

The schools with the lowest social mission scores? Vanderbilt, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. Also on the low end were Stanford, Duke, Columbia, NYU and Johns Hopkins. Overall, northeastern schools fared much poorly than schools in other areas.
