It’s cloudy and foggy in New York City this morning, somber weather that likely matches the mood of half of the body politic in America. Some of the other half is understandably exuberant. Some will be more subdued, hoping that change is at hand, but having been disappointed by the system so often, rightfully skeptical.

This has been one of the most divisive times in the history of our country, but not the only one. We have faced some terrible, awful moments – the Civil War, and then Reconstruction. The Great Depression that challenged the soul out of our country. A devastating World War that changed a generation. Then came Vietnam, and a host of endless regional conflicts, taking place against a backdrop of a world that is made smaller every day, thanks to globalization and technology.

And yet, at every juncture, Americans have risen to the challenges presented because of one thing. . .

We know we are all in this together.

As humans, we are inextricably entwined with each other, both as individuals and as tribes. It’s a bond that transcends politics and governance. It’s less about how we are different, and far more about how we are the same.

I believe with all my heart that Americans want the same things no matter where we live and what we do to make a living. We want to live in a country where our families are healthy, our communities are safe, and our prospects are hopeful. We want clean air and clean water and basic housing and services for the folks who struggle, because health and wellness are a basic human right. And we want this for all, not just for a few.

Utopia isn’t reality, but life isn’t a reality show either. We know that adversity makes us strong, but also that we really are stronger together.

So this is how we go forward. One nation. Indivisible.

With respect. With collaboration.

With outstretched hands and optimistic hearts we should strive to make America great every day.

Together.
