So you’ve picked out your outfit, packed up your work bag and made sure to get in bed on time. Yet somehow, when you wake up the next morning, your routine still feels stressful and rushed. And as we all know, a stressful morning can make your whole day unpleasant.
If, instead, we followed Poet William Blake’s advice to “Think in the morning. Act in the noon. Eat in the evening. Sleep in the night,” we could probably bank on a more relaxing day.
In this spirit, we teamed up with belVita to bring you the best ways to start your day off right.
1. Resist The Urge To Press “Snooze”
We know: easier said than done. But trust us, you’ll feel more awake if you get out of bed when your alarm goes off the first time. That’s because your body releases adrenaline after you first hear the alarm, making you feel instantly alert. By going back to sleep for those few minutes, you’re throwing off your sleep cycle.
2. Set A Couple Goals You’d Like To Accomplish Each Day
Some people think it’s best to make a list of goals for the next day before falling asleep, while others like to contemplate these in the shower or on their commute. Find out what fits into your routine and identify goals to keep you focused throughout the day.
3. Let Natural Light Flow Into Your Bedroom
This boost of sunshine will give your body extra cues that it’s time to wake up and begin the day.
4. Get Your Routine Down To A Science
If you stick to a strict routine every morning, you’ll be less tempted by distractions like catching your favorite morning television show or surfing the web.
5. Get Your Blood Flowing With Some Exercise
This can range from simple stretches, to a run, to a full yoga routine. The take-away here is to get moving so your brain and muscles get an early dose of blood and oxygen.
6. Avoid Checking Texts And Emails First Thing When You Wake Up
Not only will this sidetrack you from getting ready, but it will also put other people’s priorities before your own.
7. Listen To Something Calming
Whether it’s listening to relaxing music or your favorite podcast, giving your ears a soothing treat will help get your day started in a zen manner.
8. Limit Your Caffeine Intake
Even if you desperately need coffee in the morning, it’s best to view it as a treat consumed in moderation. That way, you'll get your morning energy without feeling jittery.
9. Know How Long You REALLY Take
Don’t give yourself an arbitrary amount of time to get ready. Instead, study your habits and give yourself the amount of time it actually takes for you to get out the door. Then, add in about 10-15 extra minutes for “wild card moments,” like accidentally getting toothpaste on your shirt.
10. Start The Day With A “Big” Task
There’s a reason you feel less motivated as the day goes on. Your self-control and willpower dwindle later in the day, so it’s best to complete duties that require concentration right when you get to the office. Resist the temptation to put them off until later in the afternoon.
11. Eat A Good Breakfast
We know you’ve heard this one a thousand times before, but that’s because it’s important for a productive, stress-free morning. Just remember that breakfast doesn’t mean gulping down a mug of coffee. Instead, opt for something satisfying and wholesome, such as a bowl of yogurt topped with fresh fruit -- and a soft-baked belVita breakfast biscuit, of course!
