Most Economically Diverse Colleges

Of the wealthiest colleges and universities in the country, the University of California at Los Angeles is the most economically diverse, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.

The Chronicle considered the percentage of students receiving Pell Grants – which gives federal money to needy families -- as a proxy for economic diversity at the institutions with the largest endowments in the 2008-2009 academic year.

According to this metric, UCLA has the most economically diverse student body, with 30.7 percent receiving the subsidy. Next on the list are Smith College and the University of Texas at Austin, with 23.6 percent and 21.4 percent of students receiving Pell grants, respectively.
