Mother Accused Of Leaving Kid In Hot Car Does It Again At Courthouse

A Virginia woman is in jail this week after allegedly leaving two children in a hot car outside the Henrico County courthouse while she turned herself in for previously a leaving a child in a hot car.

Police on Monday charged Laquanda Newby, 25, with three counts of contributing to the delinquency or abuse of a child after the two children, ages 1 and 6, were found in her car with the windows closed. Surveillance footage showed the kids may have been in the car for more than an hour, according to Media General.

“Their shirts were wet. They had sweat on their brows," Henrico Sheriff’s Capt. David Kinkle told WTVR. “They seemed to be OK when the deputies brought them out, but they were very hot.” It was 91 degrees on Monday, according to the news station. Henrico is just outside of the state capital Richmond.

The children were given water and food in the courthouse until their father arrived.

Newby was at the courthouse to turn herself in on a warrant related to a May 26 incident in which she allegedly left one of her children in the car while at a local Sam's Club.

If you see a kid alone in a hot car, experts recommend calling 911. Temperatures in closed cars can quickly exceed ambient temperatures and lead to heatstroke in children or pets. Nearly 700 children died from heatstroke in cars between 1991 and 2013, according to the advocacy group Kids and Cars.
