PHOTOS: Mother Teresa's 101st Birthday Honored In India

Somber tributes were paid to Mother Teresa in India on what would have been her 101st birthday.

As CathNews India is reporting, ceremonies began with a 6 a.m. mass, during which Coadjutor Archbishop Thomas D’Souza of Calcutta urged the crowd to emulate Mother Teresa, described as "a humble missionary of love." Visitors to the Mother House, the global headquarters of Missionaries of Charity which the nun founded, placed marigold petals spelling out "Happy Birthday our Dearest Mother" on the tomb before kneeling before it.

Though Mother Teresa was born Aug. 26, 1910 in what is now Skopje in Macedonia, the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize winner spent most part of her life in Calcutta (or Kolkata), working relentlessly for the poor.
