Despite its concrete exterior, Los Angeles is a veritable garden of florists and other sundry flower options. Find an exotic assortment of Mother's Day blooms at these local flower shops. And as with the sending of flowers on any holiday, be sure to arrange for your arrangements early.
Los Angeles Flower District: This downtown wholesale flower market has the largest selection of flowers and flower supplies on the west coast and is thus a prime DIY option for making your own fabulous bouquet. Just like mama taught you, home-made gifts always have a special appeal, and you'll save a pretty penny throwing a big, lush arrangement together on your own. Admission to the Los Angeles Flower District is $2. Get there early, (like 6 a.m. early), for the best selection. 754 Wall St.; 213-622-1966
The Empty Vase Florist: This WeHo florist specializes in creative and utterly elegant arrangements and plants. The Empty Vase Florist offers a selection of pristine orchids, and they'll also add a candle, box of chocolates and other assorted gifts in with your bouquet. Prices here might be in the upper range of your budget, but they assure that their flowers will have a shelf life of at least three days, and more with the right TLC. 9033 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood; 310-278-1988
Descanso Gardens: You can literally surround your mama with flowers by spending Mother's Day at Descano Gardens. This historic public garden offers 160 acres of blooming irises, lilacs, camellias, roses, cherry trees and more. Descano is also sponsoring a Mother's Day brunch at the garden's on site restaurant. 1418 Descanso Dr., La Canada Flintridge; 818-949-4200
Gillyflowers: Sunset Junction's Gillyflowers will work with you, Eastside kids, to design an arrangement as unique as your mother and as expensive as your budget allows. We like their low, lush succulent arrangements. 3936 Sunset Blvd.; 323-953-2910
Ezai Floral Design: Westside shop Ezai Floral Design creates arrangements with striking elegance and sleek silhouettes, (owner Yen Nguyen used to work at an architecture firm). Prices start at $45, and Ezai also offers herb and cactus plants. 1332 5th St., Santa Monica; 310-260-1410
