Mubarak And Family Placed Under House Arrest: Egypt Military

Mubarak Under House Arrest

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been placed under house arrest, the military council to which he handed power on Feb. 11 said, quashing rumors that the embattled leader and his family had fled to Saudi Arabia.

"There is no truth to reports that former president Hosni Mubarak has left Egypt for Tabuk in Saudi Arabia," the nation's military rulers are quoted by AFP as saying in a statement on Facebook. "He is under house arrest, with his family, in Egypt," they said.

USA Today cites Egyptian newspaper Al Masry Al Youm as reporting that the Mubaraks are currently banned from travel and their assets are frozen. In addition, they face several corruption charges, the newspaper says.

In the latest move to ease harsh restrictions since Mubarak was ousted in February, Egypt's military rulers separately announced Monday that the country's hated emergency laws will be lifted before parliament elections set for September, the Associated Press is reporting. The laws have been in place since 1981, when Mubarak took power.
