Donald J. Trump has been sworn in as the 45th pesident of the United States. Like many Americans, I refused to watch any of the inauguration proceedings because of the divisive and hateful campaign Trump ran last year. I spent most of my adult life serving in the military, and I am trained to accept decisions once they are made, but accepting Donald Trump as POTUS has been extremely hard for me, and many other Americans.

I guess I am still in shock from the election results, and the fact that Trump ran one of the dirtiest campaigns in American history and still ascended to the Presidency. Couple that with Trump’s tweets, temperament, lack of understanding of government affairs, and his total disregard for decency; you can understand why me and many Americans are protesting during this Presidential inauguration.

I have had conversations with friends, and colleagues who I believe voted for Trump. They all keep telling me Trump will change when he is sworn in, and that everyone should support our new President. When I ask them about the people who refused to support Obama for eight years; they all say, that is in the past and we should move on. This type of dismissiveness is a big part of the problem with American politics today.

African Americans are particularly hurt by the Trump presidency, because he was the leader of the birther movement, which asserted that Barack Obama was an illegitimate President because he was not an American citizen. I believe most African Americans are more upset with the lack of support Republicans in Congress showed the President while the birther accusations permeated, until Trump was finally forced to acknowledge Obama as an American citizen.

Most of Donald Trumps cabinet choices look like a who’s who of the inept. Trump and his team are clearly making impulsive decisions with no consideration for the American people or the unintended consequences of the choices they are making. Our Government may be dysfunctional at times, but I have never considered it to be a swamp. One thing is clear; the people who voted for Trump hate Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama more than they love their country. I can’t think of any other explanation for turning the country over to someone who has demonstrated they are emotionally unstable.

Regardless of Russian interference, incompetence, or a campaign full of false promises, Donald Trump is the President of the United States now. We all must accept that fact, rather we like it or not. Trump needs to acknowledge he is now the leader of the free world, and quit acting like a spoiled insecure brat. Trump needs to switch from campaign mode and do his job; all of the American people demand it.

I still don’t believe Trump ever really wanted to be POTUS. I think his campaign caught fire, resonated with some of the American people, and his ego wouldn’t let him quit. Well Mr. Trump, you have caught the bus, you will now be held accountable by the media, the American people and the world for the next four years. You cannot run, you cannot hide, and your legacy will be compared to a man who is leaving office with very high approval ratings, a scandal free presidency, a man you tried to delegitimize and ridicule for eight years. America was great when I woke up this morning; I pray America is still great in 2020 when Donald Trump leaves office.
