HuffPost Green is launching a week-long, community-driven effort to bust the myths and raise awareness about pit bulls, a maligned "breed" that often bears the brunt of dated, discriminatory legislation that can make it near impossible for these dogs to find a forever home. You can follow along with HuffPost Pit Bull Week here, or on Facebook and Twitter where we'll be using the hashtag #PitBullWeek.
It's Pit Bull Week here at HuffPost, a time to celebrate those happy, slobbery, adorable dogs we've come to know and love.
Stereotypes abound around the term "pit bull," and many of these dogs face an uphill battle for acceptance as their owners fight to legally own them, to be able to afford to house them and to simply keep them alive. But the tides are turning. Families are fighting back against discriminatory pit bull bans, pit bull lovers have marched on Washington and even President Barack Obama has come out against breed-specific legislation.
So, in the spirit of all the hard work pit bull advocates have put in to save these dogs, we asked you to send us photos of your pit bulls, and finish the simple sentence "My pit bull..." Here are some of those answers.
West is a 7-month-old puppy in Washington, D.C. in need of a forever home. Her foster mom says she loves kids and other dogs, already knows how to sit and lie down and needs lots of love and exercise. If you are interested in adopting her, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Samson is a year and a half year old pit bull mix currently in a Washington, D.C., foster. He's loving and energetic and will thrive in a family that can give him lots of exercise and structure. Anyone interested in Samson can email his foster Amanda at email@example.com.
