My Ten-Item Wardrobe Fall/ Winter 2013

The 10-item wardrobe does not mean you only have 10 items in your closet. You have a set of core items plus extras. These extras help round out your wardrobe and fill in the gaps where needed.

Many people, when they first hear about the 10-item wardrobe, feel a range of emotions:
curiosity, fear, disbelief, skepticism, and even guilt.

Curiosity because, wait: Does that really mean I only have 10 items in my closet?

Fear because you don't know how the whole process would work. What will people think of me if I wear the same thing all the time?

Disbelief because you are used to having a closet crammed with hundreds of garments. What would I do with all of the clothes I already have?

Skepticism because you don't believe you can get through a week with so few clothes. Will I be forever doing laundry?

And guilt because you are reminded that you probably bought 10 items last month alone, and don't even want to think about how many clothes you've bought in the last year.

Well, I'm here to tell you that making the switch to a capsule wardrobe will change your life. So take that initial curiosity for the concept and commit to just trying it as an experiment. You don't have to pick only 10 core items. Pick twenty if it makes you more comfortable. But what you should do is get rid of all of those clothes you have that are cluttering up your closet and confusing your sense of style.

My 10-item wardrobe for fall and winter, consists of:

Three dresses
Three blouses
Two pairs of skinny jeans
Two sweaters

+ Two transitional pieces: a linen skirt and dress.

I will wear the transitional pieces during the warm California autumn and phase them out as the weather gets colder. Come winter, they will be traded in for the sweaters.

Here are just some of the benefits of switching to a 10-item wardrobe:

You will hone in on what your true style is.
You will never go through another day wearing something that you regret.
You will become very discerning and not just buy any old thing because it is on sale.
Because you will be shopping less, you'll be able to afford higher quality clothes.
You will never again proclaim that you have "nothing to wear".
The whole process of curating your wardrobe is creatively fulfilling.

The 10-item wardrobe does not mean you only have 10 items in your closet. You have a set of core items plus extras. These extras help round out your wardrobe and fill in the gaps where needed. Tee shirts, cardigans, outerwear, accessories, cocktail dresses and blazers are not included in your 10 items. Tailor the concept to fit your lifestyle. For example, if you live in a very cold climate and need to add more sweaters, go for it!

I hope you'll check out the video showing my fall/ winter 10-item wardrobe. Everything in the video was purchased by me. I have no affiliation with any of the brands mentioned, except for London Sole, which is our family business. Many of the items featured are years old and not available in stores any more. The brands in the video are mentioned purely for informational purposes.

Enjoy! And let me know how the 10-item wardrobe works out for you.
