Residents from Nags Head, North Carolina to Coney Island, New York fled their homes in preparation of Hurricane Irene. The hurricane pounded the East Coast of the United States on Saturday, leaving at least six people dead and up to one million without power before continuing to make its way north.
The hurricane made landfall on North Carolina's Outer Banks early Saturday morning, bringing with it sustained winds of 90 mph and gusts up to 110 mph, according to Jeff Masters at Weather Underground.

As of Saturday evening, Hurricane Irene was back out at sea, and the hurricane watch for areas south of Cape Fear, N.C. had been lifted, according to the National Weather Service. But areas north of the Carolinas, including Chesapeake Bay, New York City, parts of New Jersey, Rhode Island and coastal Connecticut, remained on high alert.
Residents of Nags Head -- a small Outer Banks resort town -- were told to evacuate, but the Charlotte Observer reports that about one-third of them stayed behind.
