Considering our deep love for STEM-related projects here at HuffPost -- and any initiative that invites young girls and women into the male-dominated Marvel world, for that matter -- this news is simply wonderful.
Natalie Portman and "Thor: The Dark World" have just announced a new contest exclusively for teen girls who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math. Portman even made a video about it (which you can watch here) where she talks about her "Thor" character Jane Foster, an astrophysicist, and her own personal love for science.
“The role gave me an amazing opportunity to explore science in all its possibilities," she says.

Finalists from the applicant pool of MARVEL’S THOR: THE DARK WORLD - ULTIMATE MENTOR ADVENTURE will be selected for the opportunity to meet some of the most incredible women in science, all while conducting interviews, participating in experiments and interactive events, and getting the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes where the general public is not normally invited – all while having this adventure filmed.
Their experience will be made into a video short which will be shown prior to the opening day screening of "Thor: The Dark World." Applicants must be at least 14 years old and in grades 9-12.
Between this and Natalie Portman's awesome statement earlier this week about feminism being about more than just "kicking-ass," she's quickly becoming one of our favorite Hollywood role models.
