Ken Salazar, the Secretary of the Interior, announced the designation on Tuesday of 13 new historic landmarks in 9 different states.

In a press release from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Salazar said, “Each of these landmarks teaches us about the history of our land, our people, and our nation - from pictographs dating back two millennia to a World War II warship. By designating these sites as National Historic Landmarks, we are ensuring that future generations will know these important chapters in our nation’s story.”

The new sites range from a Frank Lloyd-Wright designed campus in Florida and the beloved lighthouse in Montauk, New York.

There are already 2,500 National Historic Landmarks throughout the country. The program was started in 1935.
