New Chili Pepper Bred Exclusively For Bigger Jalapeño Popper Cheese Haul

Tackling a problem we didn't know existed, the New Mexico State University chile pepper breeding program has developed a larger variety of jalapeño pepper that when stuffed with cheese, breaded and deep-fried will be, yes, larger than its jalapeño popper forebears.

The new pepper is dubbed the NuMex Jalmundo, which Paul Bosland of the nonprofit Chile Pepper Institute explains, is "a contraction of jalapeño and the Spanish word for world (mundo), implying that it is as big as the world." The NuMex Jalmundo was developed from a hybridization of a bell pepper and a traditional jalapeño.
