'New Girl': Nick Is Jess' 'Emotional Fluffer'

On the latest episode of "New Girl," Jess was trying to do the whole casual sex thing, but found she's not very good at it. Her tendency is to get emotionally attached, and so she used Nick as her emotional surrogate -- or "fluffer." He gave her the emotional connection she was craving so she could have cheap and meaningless sex with Sam. That's a win-win, right? Unless you're Nick.

Since the beginning of the season, it's been clear that there was an attraction between Nick and Jess. The most obvious route is for the show to very slowly go there, but how soon is too soon? In this third episode of the second season, they almost admitted they had feelings for one another.

Jake Johnson (Nick) explained it pretty well in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He said, "If the characters are being true to themselves, they're not ready to be together. They obviously have an attraction, though, and that's what the episode is about; slowly starting to admit that they're denying it."

That slow burn on the central relationship has kept fans tuning in to countless shows before "New Girl." Will it work again? The new season continues on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
