Juming Tang, a WSU professor of biological systems engineering, has invented a new method to preserve food that could make canning obsolete.

"We use a longwave microwave to heat the product to a high temperature to kill bacterial spores," he said. "The system we've designed is very unique in that the process time is much shorter."
